Walter "Wally"
Pribyl
November 1, 1948 – March 24, 2014
Wally was born November 1, 1948 in Heron Lake, Minnesota to Bernard and Florence (Dodge) Pribyl. He grew up working in his father's drugstore and throughout his life he found working a great way to enjoy people. He loved competing in baseball, football, basketball, track, bowling and golf. His favorite activities were practicing punting, pole vaulting and waterskiing.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he played football for the Golden Gophers. Wally developed life-long friendships with his teammates and Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity brothers. While attending graduate school, he coached freshman football, then coached and taught at Inver Hills Junior College. At the U of M he met and married his wife Kathy. They had three sons, Steve, Todd and Sam who filled their lives with love and great adventures.
After leaving Inver Hills, Wally worked in sales for Marshall Fruit in Worthington, Minnesota and then selling Harvestores in Cherokee, Iowa. After six years in sales, he found an A & W restaurant for sale in Webster, South Dakota. It was the perfect place to live with his wife and sons and enjoy lakes, waterskiing, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed teaching young people the things he loved to compete at and how to be the best at whatever you do. The former employees at the A & W Restaurant in Webster will remember many of the quotes he was known for sharing such as "work smarter, not harder" , "when the breaks go against you, don't let down, put on more steam", and probably his most famous was P.M.A. (Positive Mental Attitude). In the 26 years he and Kathy owned and operated the restaurant, he felt it was his job to prepare many young people for success in life. In his free time, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Finance Council and Building Committee at Christ the King. He also enjoyed serving as an early member of the Webster Development Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Webster School Board and Webster City Council.
In 2006, after running the A&W for 26 years, they sold their restaurant and Wally began a seven year battle with cancer. He looked upon cancer as another competition and continued working out, golfing, bowling, driving the activities school bus, volunteering at the museum and never letting cancer take away his joy of living each day. He followed political action closely and maintained regular contact with Senators and Congressional Representatives.
Wally is survived by his wife, Kathy, their three sons; Steve (Karin) and their children Hayden (8) and Madeline (4) of Farmington, Minnesota, Todd of St Anthony, Minnesota and Sam (Mary) of Jonesboro, Arkansas. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Pribyl and his sister, Janet Wilson and many in-laws, cousins, and their families.
