Verna was born February, 4, 1935, in Grenville, SD to Alvina (Hojnacke) & Ben Kwasniewski. She attended country school for three years and graduated from St Joseph High School, Grenville, SD in 1953.  After graduating she worked in Pierre and Brighton, MN.  In 1955, she married Phil Kurkowski and began life as a farm wife. She had a passion for children, taught CCD and was employed at the Roslyn/Eden School District for 25 years.

Survivors are sons Greg (Jackie) Kurkowski, Steve (Rita) Kurkowski, Randy (Claudette Opitz) Kurkowski, and Pat (Charlene) Kurkowski; grandchildren Grant, Vanessa, Destiny, Hope & Faith Kurkowski; her sister Joan Rumpca and a sister-in-law Rosella Kwasniewski.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Phil, brothers George and James.
