Shirley Jerde, 86, of Waubay, SD died Monday, May 12, 2014 at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 Friday, May 16 at Zion Lutheran Church, Waubay with Rev. Jeff Kalb officiating. Burial will be in the Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay.

Visitation will be from 5-7 Thursday at Coester Funeral Home, Webster and will resume again one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Shirley was born on May 4, 1928 in Day County, SD to Claude & Irene (Butler) Peeper. She attended school in Waubay and graduated in 1946. She then attended Aberdeen Normal Teacher College where she received her teacher's certificate. Shirley taught school for a short period of time and then worked at the bank before coming a farm wife.

Shirley married Verle Jerde on November 10, 1949 in Groton. Together they made their home farming South of Waubay. Verle passed away March 25, 1992. Shirley remained on the farm until moving to Waubay and since 2013 Shirley has resided at Jenkins Living Center, Watertown.

Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Waubay where she was the organist for many years and Waubay Senior Citizens Center.

Shirley enjoyed playing cards, making Afghans, crocheting, spending time with family and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life was her two sons; Alan (Dede) of Waubay, SD, Dale (Brenda) Florence, SD, one daughter; Karen Mikkelson Watertown, SD, 19 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Larry, one grandchild Abby.
