Sgt. Major (Ret.) Joseph J. Martin USMC, 84, of Waubay, SD died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.
Military Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.
Visitation will be from 9-11 Mon., Jan. 20 at Coester Funeral Home, Webster.
Joe was born on July 10, 1929 in North Dakota to William Martin and Inez Brown. In September of 1947, after completing his education, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. The Marine Corps provided Joe with the opportunity to see the world and develop many lasting friendships. Or as Joe states, "He found a home." Joe was in the Marine Corps for 30 years, serving stateside and overseas. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.
Joe married the love of his life, Dorothy Ryan on November 15, 1967 in New Rochelle, New York.
Upon his retirement from the Marine Corp in 1975 Joe and Dorothy moved to Waubay. Joe enjoyed a social life with friends and family. Spending weekends at his lake cabin on Enemy Swim Lake and traveling with Dorothy and their schnauzer dogs. He also attended Lake Area Vocational School, in Watertown, SD to become a Carpenter.
Joe was involved with the Fort Sisseton Commission, J.R. Brown Historical Society, Henderson, MN and was also the mayor of Waubay. He was a life-long member of the VFW and remained especially close to the Marines that he was stationed with at the American Embassy in Paris, France. He was instrumental in setting up a yearly reunion for this group of men.
Grateful for having shared his life was a step-daughter; Patsy Henshaw of Yonkers, NY., her children Dorian, Lara and Bobby. Sister, Dawnena Howel of Colorado Springs, CO., her children: Virgil Howell, Jr., Verla Howell, Carrie Howell, Debra Howell all of CO, and Mary (Willie) Wolf of Seattle, WA. Nephew, Donald (Cindy) Miller, of Watertown, SD, Nieces, Sharon (Andy) Espland of Lake Norden, SD, and Karen (Michael) Stusiak of Watertown, SD. Many relatives, friends and comrades in arms.
He was preceded in death by his wife, step son Peter, mother, father, sister, Dorothy Miller and schnauzer dogs, George, Max and Boot.
