Marlene Grimes, 76, of Lily, SD died Tuesday, Sept.16, 2008 at Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 Sat. Sept. 20, 2008 Christ The King Catholic Church, Webster. Private family burial will be held at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Lily.
Visitation will be from 1-4 Friday at Coester Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 6-8 at the church with a Scriptural wake service at 7:00.
Marlene Marie Herr was born on January 16, 1932 in Butler, SD to Carl & Cordie (Currier) Herr. She grew up in rural Bristol, Butler, and Lily Communities and attended school at Lily graduating in 1950.
On June 28, 1950, she married Irwin Roy Grimes in Watertown, SD. The couple lived in Lily all of their married life. They were divorced in 1974.
Marlene started working at Dakotah in 1974 and up until her death she worked part-time at Creative Home Furnishings (Dakotah) in Webster. Marlene was also co-owner/operator of The Drug Store in Lily.
Marlene was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Lily, Lily American Legion Auxiliary, and the Lily Hoe Downers Square Dance Club.
Marlene enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, baking, sewing, and was a great mom. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children Marla (Steve) Williamson, Webster, SD, Carla (Lonnie) Gross of Gillette, WY, Irlyn (Mary) Grimes, Airway Heights, WA, Austin (Marion) Grimes, Webster, SD, Terry Grimes, Webster, SD, Lori (Scott) Cunningham, Aberdeen, SD, Randy (Dawna) Grimes, Watertown, SD, and Lisa Hirsch, Piedmont, SD, 14 grandchidren, 15 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, 1 step great-grandchild, one brother Harlan (Alma) Herr, Webster, SD, one sister, Stella (Arnold) Lorensberg, Clear Lake, SD, one sister-in-law, JoAnn Herr, Webster, SD and one brother-in-law, Gary Youell, Lily, SD. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Arvid and Carroll, one sister, Maxine Hoover Youell, two nephews, Tom Herr and Randy Herr, and one sister-in-law, Veronica Herr.
Active pallbearers will be her sons Austin Grimes, Terry Grimes, Randy Grimes, & Irlyn Grimes.
Honorary Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and former and present employees of Creative Home Furnishings (Dakotah).
