Louise
Baumgarn
March 22, 1957 – May 14, 2024
Live Love. Laugh. Louise Dorothy Baumgarn was born on Friday, March 22, 1957 to Earl Sr. and Verna (Schoenbeck) Baumgarn at the Peabody Hospital in Webster, SD. She was the youngest of 8 siblings which accounts for the statement that she repeated often, "I'm not spoiled. I'm just really, really loved!" They all watched out for her and loved her. She knew that.
Louise was baptized with her brother, Larry, on February 14, 1962, at American Lutheran Church in Webster. This was the beginning of a dedicated relationship with her church as a Luther Leaguer, Sunday school teacher, superintendent, Church council member, secretary, and in later years, one of the main lefse and meatball makers at the annual ALC Lutefisk Supper. Her church was very important to her all her life.
As a young girl, Louise worked at the Webster Theatre. She became the chief popcorn maker, and later ticket taker throughout her school years. She was honored with a mink coat from Virginia Scheneker for her many years of service to the patrons of the Webster Theatre. Nobody made better popcorn than Louise.
Louise attended and graduated from Webster High School with the Class of 1975. She was active in Girls Athletic Association, drama, and a staff member of the Websterian high school newspaper. She was a huge supporter of the Webster Bearcats throughout the years, following her brothers, and later her nephews and nieces. Louise served on the Webster Alumni Association for many years, mostly because she knew everyone that graduated from WHS. She continued to follow her nieces and nephews, and friends' children throughout their high school and college careers. Louise became their biggest fan, with her pregame texts and occasionally was able to supply treats for the teams. While watching from home, her television, I-pad and computer would often be set on 3 different games each night. She never missed a play or a recap afterwards. She was also a huge supporter of the Chicago Bears.
Louise received her cosmetology degree from Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen in 1977. After working in Aberdeen, and later Pierre, she established herself as a well-known businesswoman in Webster with the opening of The Mini Hut.
It was a business that flourished in a few different places on Main Street, and there wasn't a permed head in town that she didn't have something to do with over the years.
In June of 1995 Louise joined her mother on staff at the Day County Sheriff's Department as a night jailer. She later became a dispatcher and was eventually promoted to jail manager. Louise was instrumental in establishing the SAVIN victim notification program and a commissary program for inmates in Day County over the course of her 23-year career. Louise was well known for her cooking and baking while on staff in the sheriff's department. It was said that the inmates came back to jail to get a good meal, and always gained weight in Day County while she was cooking. Louise retired in 2018.
Louise was known by many names. Her family called her Suzy. Her friends called her Weazy. Her bowling buddies called her Louise. She was crowned the State 600 Champ in 1987 and enjoyed bowling with her mom and sisters for many years. "You know I raised you." Many youngsters around town were confused by Weazy's often repeated statement to her friends' children. She pierced their ears, and permed them to death, but in her world, she raised a bunch of kids, and loved them hard. There wasn't a softer place than on Weazy's lap. She knew who loved chocolate chips in their banana bread, and what kind of pickles to use in her famous roll ups. Her many children will always remember her with a smile.
Grateful for having shared her life are three brothers; Norman (Peggy) of Grand Forks, ND, Earl of Webster, SD, Keith (Cathy) of Westfield, IN, one sister; Janet Coyne of Columbia, MO, several nieces and nephews and three Goddaughters; Sarah Spiering & Gail Richter, & Victoria "Tori" Richter. She was also survived by sister-in-laws; Kristie Baumgarn & Marilyn Baumgarn, & brother-in-law; Wayne Jaquet,
Louise was preceded in death by her parents; Earl Sr. & Verna Baumgarn, brothers Terry & Larry Baumgarn, Sister Karen Jaquet, brother-in-law; Chuck Coyne; four great-nephews; Mason, Tucker, Colt Baumgarn & Leighton Frye, also preceding her in death one niece Gail Richter.
