Joan
Weismantel
November 1, 1942 – April 20, 2024
Joan Weismantel, 82, of Webster died Saturday, April 20 at Sun Dial Manor, Bristol.
Joan Margaret (Rohwer) Weismantel was born November 1, 1941, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and peacefully passed away at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol, South Dakota, on April 20, 2024. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Annabeth (Paulson) Rohwer and the beloved sister of three siblings, John, Judy and Janet.
Joan's life was marked by a commitment to education and family. She graduated from Groton High School in 1959 and continued her studies at Northern State Teachers College, earning her degree in 1961. On June 3, 1961, Joan married the love of her life, Allan Oliver Weismantel, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and adventure.
Their journey began in Big Spring, Texas, where Allan was stationed as an Airman at Webb Air Force Base. During this time, they welcomed their first child, Susan Deann Weismantel, into the world on October 10, 1962. The family later relocated back to Columbia, South Dakota, where their second daughter, Shawn Delaine (Weismantel) Kramer, was born on October 25, 1963.
Joan first taught in the junior high school at Columbia, South Dakota. Later, she ventured into entrepreneurship, opening a local preschool that provided valuable early childhood education to the community and employed nearby Northern State College education majors.
Throughout their lives, Allan and Joan embraced opportunities and relocated several times to pursue their career paths. They lived in Aberdeen (1965-1969), Sioux Falls (1969-1972), Groton (1972-1974), Plainview, Texas (1974-1976), Groton (1976 -1982), Walhalla, North Dakota (1982-1994), Pickeral Lake (1994 - 2008).
In 1977, she and her husband, Allan, opened A&J Hardware in downtown Groton and managed that until 1982. In Walhalla, Joan began preparing income taxes, selling insurance and real estate. Eventually, a dear friend invited her to learn real estate appraisal. All of these vocations, allowed her to learn and study, as she would say, "to the inth degree!" She opened Weismantel Appraisal in 1985 and ran that business for over 20 years, with Allan joining her in 1992. She held the highest certifications and credentials in her field.
In 2008, Allan and Joan settled in the Dallas, Texas area where they spent the final weeks with daughter Shawn. They enjoyed their retirement years together with their RV. They settled in Allen, Texas, enabling them to live near their grandchildren. However, when Joan's health declined, they returned to northeastern South Dakota, settling in Watertown. Allan lovingly relocated to Webster, South Dakota this past year to be by her side as she was moved to Sun Dial Manor, in Bristol.
Joan will be remembered for her unwavering sharp wit, love for her family, desire to create beauty through gardening, home renovations and makeovers, making unusual meals, hosting a great party, and an adventurous spirit. She loved Pickeral Lake, hosting family and friends there, and FISHING! She leaves behind a legacy of love, determination, humor and love of life that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Joan Margaret Rohwer Weismantel is survived by her devoted husband, Allan Weismantel and their youngest daughter, Anne (Daniel) Kjellgren of Mooresville, North Carolina, their children Abbey, of Dallas, Texas, Erik of Charlotte, North Carolina and Annika of Wilmington, North Carolina, as well as two sisters, Judy (John) Windorski of Braham, Minnesota and Janet (Merle) Harder of Waubay, South Dakota as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She is preceded in death by two daughters, Susan Deann Weismantel and Shawn Delaine (Weismantel) Kramer, her parents, brother John, brother-in-law Keith, sisters-in-law Audrey Kabella (Keith) and Cheri (Lyle) Weismantel.
At Joan's request, a service will not be held. She will be cremated and interred at South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
