Gladys was born April 29, 1922 at Waubay to Arthur & Daisy Belle (Witcombe) Peterson. She was a baptized and confirmed member of Egeland Lutheran Church. She attended Egeland #212 country school through 8th grade. Because both parents died, at age thirteen she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Fred and Hazel Haase and graduated from Webster High School in 1940. She worked at the AAA office and Northwestern Public Service. Later she moved to California and married Virgil Knudson September 4, 1942 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. In 1947, they returned to South Dakota and farmed the Peterson homestead until moving into Waubay in 1968, where she attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church and its ladies' groups. Virgil died on February 1, 2005.

Gladys was a homemaker who appreciated simple and practical things. She enjoyed baking; among her specialties were homemade breads, pies, doughnuts, sugar cookies, and angel food cakes. Though frugal in other matters, she generously shared these goodies with family and friends. In her younger years she sewed clothes for herself and her family and won honorable mention recognition in a state Make-It-With-Wool contest. She also enjoyed embroidery and reading, especially the Bible. Gladys' life centered around her Christian faith and fearlessly expressed her beliefs.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Beverly Jo (Jon) Zubke of Waubay, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three nephews.

Gladys was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, two brothers, and one sister.

Coester Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
