Francis "Fritz" Grosek, 92, of Webster, died Sunday, September 18 at Bethesda Home, Webster.
Fritz was born on March 29, 1924, the oldest of 14 children, to Frank & Jeanette (Swant) Grosek. He married Marion Johnson on April 16, 1945. They farmed in the Webster area before moving to Webster in 1953.
In 1954 Fritz started Grosek Services Gas Station along Hwy 12. In 1958 he opened Grosek Tire Service. Grosek Services was begun in 1978 which included construction, custom manure hauling, excavating and gravel hauling.
In 1986 Fritz went back into the tire business until selling it in 1989 only to downsize to a tire/battery store which he ran on Webster's Main Street until his failing health forced him to retire in 2015. He loved to work at his business' and to spend time with and talking to people.
Even though he couldn't read a note of music, it was his passion. He could play any song he heard by ear on several different instruments. Fritz played saxophone in a band in his 20's and again in the 1960's and 70's under the name of the Moonliters. He also loved taking his "daughters" and granddaughters on their yearly Christmas shopping trip for their special gifts.
Fritz served as a Day County Commissioner for a short period of time in 1981. He also enjoyed building, buying, and reselling commercial businesses.
Grateful for having shared his life is one son; Mike of Webster, SD, two daughters; Mary Jean (Chuck) Hesla of Webster, SD, Pat (Valdis) Birznieks of Denver, CO, one daughter-in-law Stacie Grosek of Sioux Falls, SD, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, two brothers and seven sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marion, one son; Duane, one great grandson; Gunnar Birznieks, two sisters, and two brothers.
