Duaine Wallace Greenhagen, 82, of Waubay died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 Monday, February 10, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Waubay. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Waubay with Military Graveside Rites Conducted by Brady Monson American Legion Post #129. Lunch will follow at the Waubay Legion.
Visitation will be from 5-7 Sunday, February 9 at Coester Funeral Home, Webster with a prayer service at 7.
Duaine was born March 11, 1931 on a farm near Howard Lake MN to Henry and Hilda Greenhagen. He attended schools in Howard Lake, St James Lutheran school, and then Howard Lake High School. After graduating in 1949, Duaine worked in construction and played baseball as the star catcher for the Howard Lake Orphans and professionally as catcher for the Minor League Giants in the Dakotas before enlisting in the Army in 1952, serving in Japan during the Korean War.
In Dec 1953 he was released from active duty and transferred to the Army reserve to complete 8 yrs of service, during which he attended USD in Vermillion SD, playing both football and baseball while earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, and graduating in 1958.
Duaine married Edna Soulek Aug 24, 1957 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Waverly MN. The couple moved to Raymond MN in 1958 where Duaine was a teacher, coach, and counselor. Duaine continued to play baseball for teams in SD and NE and then was the manager/player for the Raymond Rockets baseball team until 1974. While working and raising a family, Duaine earned a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Bemidji State University in 1974. That same year, he moved with his family to Waubay SD where he accepted a position as counselor, teacher, and coach for Waubay High School. Then in 1979 Duaine began working as a Job Service Counselor for the SD Department of Labor until 1986. He then returned to Waubay High School for another two years before retiring in 1988.
Duaine continued to play and coach baseball for many years. In 2013 he was inducted into the Raymond Rockets Baseball hall of fame. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and playing cards, and was blessed to be able to do these things with family and friends until he left this world.
Duaine enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, especially at his lake cabin on Enemy Swim Lake. He loved to share stories his lifetime experiences playing baseball and football, hunting and fishing with his friends and loved ones.
Duaine was a loving husband to Edna for 47 years until her passing in 2004 and continued to be a great father, grandfather, and friend until Feb 5, 2014 when our Lord and Savior took him home.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children; Traci (Ryan) Althoff of Watertown, Susan (Brian) Tracy of Pierre, Rodney (Carin) Greenhagen of Ft. Pierre, and Kasha (Don) Kriech of Waubay, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, three sisters; Vernice Bersie of Minnetonka MN, Gladys Doering of Howard Lake, MN, and Elaine Nelson of Rockford MN, one brother in-law Ron Soulek of Kenosha WI, five sister in-laws; Lucille Greenhagen of Annadale, MN, Norma Greenhagen of Inver Grove Heights MN, Arlene Greenhagen of Coon Rapids MN, Ann Greenhagen of Buffalo MN, and Dona Soulek of Manitou Springs CO. Lastly his loyal dog, Moss.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry & Hilda, wife, Edna, one grandchild, Lily Stroup, and siblings; Alfred, Arnold "Arnie", Vernon "Bud", Roland "Rollie", his twin brother, Donald "Willie", Howard Greenhagen and Dorothy Greenhagen Schostag.
