Obituary

Dorothy Hjellming, 87, of Webster, SD died Friday, April 10, 2015 at Sun Dial Manor, Bristol.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Christ The King Catholic Church, Webster. Burial will be in St. Otto's Cemetery, Webster.

Visitation will be from 5-7 Monday, April 13, at Christ The King Church with a 7:00 prayer service. Visitation will resume again one hour prior to the services at the church.

Dorothy Jean (Bierschbach) Hjellming was born April 11, 1927 To Anton and Lavinia (Becht) Bierschbach. As a child she was mischievous and kind hearted. She attended St. Otto's School and Webster High School in Webster, SD. She graduated from Northern State Teacher's College in Aberdeen, SD with a Bachelor's of Science in Education and proudly wore the number 63 for their women's football team.

Dorothy began teaching at Mount Marty College in Yankton and subsequently taught in Madison, Waubay, and Webster for 12 years. She later was a substitute teacher in Webster. Dorothy enjoyed working with children, coaching, and teaching swimming.

Dorothy married Lyle Hjellming in June of 1951. They made their home in Waubay eventually moving to Webster. Lyle and Dorothy were foster parents and adopted and raised 4 children. Dorothy supported the family business, Farm Equipment Inc. as the secretary and assistant manager.

Dorothy Jean was a perennial optimist and was active in 4-H as a member and leader. She was involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. Dorothy's love of gardening led her to become a Master Gardner in 1985 and she enjoyed tending the Mural Garden in Webster. Her commitment to horticulture led to teaching and judging at fairs throughout the state. She loved the outdoors and spending time at Blue Dog Lake. Dorothy also enjoyed playing scrabble and cards with friends and family. Her cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and apple pie were loved by many.

Dorothy was an Oblate of Mother of God Priory in Watertown. She was an active member in Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster participating as a lector, choir member, and a member of the Altar Society. Dorothy attended bible study, taught CCD, was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, a Catholic Daughter, and a member of the research club.

Dorothy is survived by her 3 children Steven Michael Hjellming, Bristol, SD, Angela Marie Deiterman, Sioux Falls, SD, James Charles (Carrie) Hjellming, Dickinson, ND, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, 5 sisters, Maxine Blood, Iva Grubl, Asella Crum, Alice Aronovitz, and Lois Ewalt and 1 brother, Jim Bierschbach.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Delores, her husband Lyle of 48 years, one daughter, Mary Kay, and 2 infant grandchildren.

Dorothy wishes to thank her former Priests, teachers, her parents, and family. Thanks also to former students and anyone who touched her life in any way. Thank you, God Bless and love you all.
