Charlotte Mae Johnson was born on November 19, 1949, to Arnold and Miriam (Mudder) Johnson in Yankton, SD. She was baptized as a daughter of God at Trinity Presbyterian in Avon, SD. Charlotte began her education at James Country School in rural Avon. On her 11 th birthday, the family moved to Lennox, SD, where Charlotte would finish elementary and high school as a proud member of the Class of 1968. Following high school, she attended South Dakota State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics education in 1972.

Charlotte then moved to Webster, SD, where she served as the middle and high school home economics instructor from 1972-2003 and served as the adviser for 28 proms. During these 32 school years, she taught young people important life skills including cooking, sewing, and living independently. More importantly, though, she taught them that they were valued, respected, and important. In students whom others may have cast aside, she saw their inherent value and helped them to see it, too. She treasured the relationships with her students and loved to connect with them through Facebook. Many students still have the aprons they sewed and their favorite recipes (usually banana bread!) that they made in Mrs. H.'s home ec. class. There were so many recipes, in fact, that she compiled them and published two editions of Charlotte's Cookbook, an accomplishment she never dreamed would happen.

On June 19, 1976, Charlotte married Bernard "Butch" Hoverstadt, Jr., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster, and the following year, she joined Christ the King Catholic Church. The couple bought four acres of land east of Webster where they built a home, raised their children, and lived together for 44 years. Two Augusts in a row, on the first day of school, they welcomed their two children, Adrienne and Benjamin, into the world. Charlotte devoted herself to raising her children and was blessed to have summers "off" to spend with them as they grew.

As the children got older, Charlotte needed more to keep her busy, so in addition to teaching, she took the position of secretary at the Webster Area Chamber of Commerce from 1996-2008. She loved talking up the city to interested outdoorsmen and planning and hosting a multitude of events, including the annual Pumpkin Fest.

Charlotte was very active and served in leadership roles in numerous community organizations. The Catholic Daughters of America, Christ the King Altar Society, church choir, Catholic Foresters, SD Past Regents of Catholic Daughters, American Legion Auxiliary, Kiwanis, Progressive Reading Circle, Red Hats, Golden Age Club, Webster Development Corp., and more all benefitted from her tireless leadership and drive to make her community better. Her accomplishments in these organizations led her to be admired by many in the county and beyond. She was so proud of setting a new all-time record for the number of units of blood donated at a drive she had organized, and she was honored to be selected as the "Vinegar Queen" at the annual Vinegar Festival.

Charlotte also had many hobbies. She loved to cheer for the Green Bay Packers and Golden State Warriors, scrapbook, garden, and entertain. She hosted numerous bridal and baby showers and parties for any occasion over the years. What Charlotte enjoyed more than anything, though, was her grandchildren. She was an extraordinary grandma—hosting tea parties, helping with 4-H projects, singing bedtime songs, reading books, and lavishing her grandchildren with love.

Charlotte passed away due to complications from COVID-19 on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 70 years, 10 months, and 17 days.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Butch; her children Adrienne (Todd) McKeown of Harrisburg, SD, and Benjamin (Rachel) Hoverstadt of Watertown, SD; her grandchildren Maggie, Ryan, and Luke McKeown and Elsie and Easton Hoverstadt. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Bonnie (Leon) Fosheim of Webster, two nieces, two nephews, her uncle Alvin (Betty) Mudder of Freeman, SD, and many beloved cousins and former students. She was preceded in death by her parents.
