Amelia Ann Snaza passed away peacefully on Friday, January 13, 2012, at the age of 91 at the Strand-Kjorsvig Living Center.
A funeral Mass will be held at the church on January 20 at 10:30 with Fr. Albert Cizewski and her grandson, Fr. Jordan Samson, officiating.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on the afternoon of January 19 from 1-4 and will resume until 8 with a Wake service at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 7. Her children will serve as her pallbearers. Amelia will be laid to rest next to her husband in the church cemetery.
Amelia was born February 7, 1920, in Waubay, South Dakota, to Anton and Rose Rumpza. She married Stanley Snaza on October 3, 1939, at Grenville, SD. and was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she served on the Parish Council and was an active member of the Altar Society.
Amelia enjoyed cooking and baking. She was widely known for her rolls, donuts, and bismarcks. She put this talent to good use during her years as a cook in the Roslyn School District. She also cooked for her sister and husband when they operated restaurants at Nash's Cafe and the Pickerel Lake Lodge.
Amelia was also known for her friendliness and kindness. She enjoyed people and would visit and help anyone she met. These qualities were very evident when she worked at the Strand-Kjorsvig Nursing Home as an aide. The residents loved her so much that one in particular would decide--without proper permission--to go visit Amelia on Amelia's days off. More than once, the Home notified Amelia that Elizabeth was "missing". Upon looking out her bedroom window, Amelia could see her walking south toward the Snaza farm!
Along with her faith, family was most important to Amelia. She was proud of her eleven children and seemed to "forget" any mischief they may have gotten into while growing up. She sincerely loved and welcomed each new grandchild and great-grandchild. She had a great sense of humor, which she demonstrated right to the last week of her life.
Amelia was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, two grandsons, one infant granddaughter, three brothers, one sister, two brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law.
Survivors include her children: Richard, Roslyn, SD; David (Diana), Milbank, SD; Janice (Jim) Kennedy, Roslyn; Dianne Kaselnak, Minneapolis, MN; Carol (Tom) Karels, Odessa, MN; Stan (Marilyn), Roslyn; Emily (Tim) Hesla, Grantsburg, WI; Mary Ellen (Ralph) Keintz, Eden, SD; Joel, Milbank; Duane (Bonnie), Delano, MN; and Susan (Curtis) Samson, Eden; 32 grandchildren, and 49 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters: Lorraine Carson and Helen (Jim) Helms and two sisters-in-law: Helen Henning and Eva Snaza.
